Hagarin Outdoor Guild Open Climb

MT. KALISUNGAN
Calauan, Laguna 17-18Jul2010
Jump-off point: Erais Farms, Brgy. Lamot, Calauan
LLA: 14° 08.790N; 121° 20.683E; 760 MASL
Days required / Hours to summit: 1 day / 2.5 hours
Specs: Minor climb, Difficulty 3/9, Trail class 1-2

BACKGROUND
In Laguna, there is a mountain that has many names. Some call it Mt. Calauan or Mt. Nagcarlan after the two towns it borders; others call it Mt. Lamot because it lies in Brgy. Lamot, and it may have been a mossy forest a long time ago. There is growing consensus, however, that this mountain, rising to 760 MASL, should be known as Mt. Kalisungan. Japanese guerillas, at the twilight of World War II, made Mt. Kalisungan their last stand in Laguna. Afterwards, locals erected a white cross at its peak. It has become a local Holy Week custom to climb the mountain. Throughout the year, Mt. Kalisungan receives ample rainfall, and because of its relatively rustic location, its great charm lies in its serenity. Verdant fields surround the slopes of Kalisungan. There are coconut trees, banana plantations, corn fields, citrus orchards, and vast grasslands leading to the summit. As one goes higher, the view becomes more distinct: directly in front of you, to the north, is Talim island with its Mt. Tagapo shaped like a young woman’s breast; you can also see Jalajala peninsula jutting into Laguna Lake like a ship, with Mt. Sembrano on its helm. Moving your eyes to east, the highlands of Caliraya appear. And once you reach the peak,
you will be able to glimpse upon the seven lakes of San Pablo, flanked by Mt. Cristobal and Mt. Banahaw. Then, from a distance there is Mt. Makiling, to the west, completing the circle.

FREEDOM CLIMB 2010

May 6, 2010

Dear Sir / Madam,

Greetings fellow mountaineer
The Federation of Filipino Mountaineers, Inc. (FIMOinc) was created to lead the way in promoting environmental awareness and campaign for our advocacy in promoting responsible mountaineering and endorse synergism among individuals and groups in the sport. It is our ultimate purpose…to advocate for the conservation, preservation and protection of our environment and to unite the mountaineering community to achieve greater good.

FIMOinc. will be organizing the 2nd ANNUAL FREEDOM CLIMB 2010 on June 11 – 13, 2010 where mountaineers from all over the country will attempt to summit 50 climbing destinations in the Philippines. As part of the event, we will simultaneously hold our flag ceremony at the summit to send our message of national unity, nationalism and environmental awareness. This event truly honors our heroes as we celebrate INDEPENDENCE DAY to where the action really happened during the war. The previous Freedom Climb was phenomenal and it was attended by 2,400 mountaineers from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The 2ND ANNUAL FREEDOM CLIMB 2010, we are expecting 3,000 Mountaineers to participate in this event nationwide. Part of this event is the FREEDOM RUN which will start at Luneta Park (Km 0) to Kawit Cavite respectively.

In lieu with this, our group would like to invite you to take part in this event. Your participation to this cause will be beneficial in continuing our vision for the development of the sport. We would also like to ask your group to prepare a theme for your chosen event and to conduct any project that would benefit the mountaineering community and the environment or whatever that can help our cause will be greatly appreciated. We would be delighted to include your group as one of the major participants to the 2nd Annual Freedom Climb 2010. Please send us your group logo so we may be able to include it on our tarpaulins and other functions.

Also attached herewith are some information and valuable details regarding the event.
We look forward for your positive response on this request the soonest time possible.
Thank you and more power.

Sincerely yours,

Jade Rance Acidre

Some notes: This is the first leg in the Mt. Sicapoo climb and we will be traversing 2 major peaks (Mt. Simmagaysay is at 1402 masl while Mt. Timmarid is 1560 masl). This is a difficult climb, getting to Mt. Simmagaysay involves trekking through open and very hot grassland ridges and the ascent to Mt. Timmarid from Mt. Simmagaysay has quite punishing ascents. The descent via Gasgas river is challenging although easier at this time of year because the waters are shallow but boulder crossing could still be perilous. Needless to say, even Gideon has given this climb an 8/9 difficulty rating so be advised that you would need to prepare physically for this climb and any first time hikers should be briefed well.
